Contract Models

SSE’s research-based education model, as mandated by the 1909 charter, requires a faculty of high international standard that matches the high demands of the academic programs, both in terms of quality and quantity. Quality is maintained through the requirement that all faculty members both teach and do research, thereby ensuring that all teaching at SSE is based on current research. Moreover, SSE requires all faculty members to be excellent teachers, involved in up-to-date research and service to the community, which SSE refers to as citizenship.

The core faculty consists of full professors, associate professors and assistant professors who divide their annual workload between research, teaching/supervising and administration. All groups normally have contracts with at least 50% research, at least 20% teaching and 10% citizenship.

This workload structure creates a balance between teaching/supervising, research and publication, reflecting one of the SSE’s basic strategies; that is, research is a central activity and a necessary condition for the success of the academic programs at SSE. The system is designed to allow each faculty member time for both professional development and citizenship.
